Drain Cover Recalls

Posted on July 13, 2011 at 8:26 PM

Isn't this just perfect? A law gets passed before the drain products to comply are even available. Then we all have to spend precious dollars during the worse economic downfall since the great depression to replace perfectly good drains in pools with two main drains. We pay for the drains and the installation and certification, then they get recalled.

How much is this going to cost me to get the old ones out and newer ones in? If I have a faulty drain will I be out of compliance? When is someone going to admit maybe they rushed this whole drain cover thing?

This is absolutely horrible and makes my stomach hurt......

There were no reported entrapment fatalities for 2009. CPSC did receive eight reports of entrapment incidents in which seven people were injured during 2009. How does this compare to other years since reported entrapments have been analyzed and calculated?

From 1999 to 2009, CPSC staff is aware of 94 reports of circulation entrapment. These included 12 fatalities, 79 injuries and three no-injury incidents related to swimming pools, spas and whirlpool tubs.

In 2008, there were 2 fatalities, 7 injuries and 1 no-injury.

2007: 2 fatalities, 2 injuries.

2006: 0 fatalities, 9 injuries.

2005: 0 fatalities, 10 injuries.

2004: 1 fatality, 3 injuries.

2003: 1 fatality, 5 injuries.

2002: 1 fatality, 13 injuries.

2001: 0 fatalities, 6 injuries.

2000: 5 fatalities, 10 injuries.

1999: 2 fatalities, 7 injuries.

There is no way to say this without appearing cold hearted, I will have to let my commitment to the aquatic industry and my service record over time to state and national organizations speak for themselves.

These numbers are so low, as an industry we were just forced to spent Millions and Millions to prevent something that has only caused a fatality twelve times in the past ten years! I once AGAIN want to shout thjat if we had only been forced to spend that money on teaching every child to swim I could probably live with the cost...
